A little late here, but this blew my mind. This thing got split in two fucking pieces and was still rebuilt, updated and sold for almost two million. WTAF. How much damage is too much to fix? Would love to see the carfax on this one.

The car was designed to split this way, I imagine it was a lot of work, but less that rebuild ing an entire chassis

Aren't McLaren f1s impossible to total, essentially? In that McLaren could build a brand new one from a hood ornament and a VIN plate for less than they are worth? Wouldn't surprise me that there are more than a few cars like that

Yesterday a friend of mine sent me this Carfax report of a 2004 Viper that was totaled in a flood in 2006, rebuilt, sold multiple times, then totaled again in a crash in 2017, rebuilt, and is for sale right now .

This could be a very interesting article - cars that can’t be totaled
(meanwhile, they’d write off anything I own for a door ding)

I recall reading that it worked as designed. But it’s still crazy to me.
So does this have any special provenance being the Dietrich car? LoL

Yep. I’d actually done some design sketches for Gizmondo back in 2003-4, fresh out of school, at my first job at Astro. So when the Gizmondo guy had that crazy Enzo crash, and Jalopnik was there... I guess I just stuck with it.
Spin, Loverman, Davey G, they were exactly the right attitude for the time. Reverent and irreverent. Aluminium und schteel.

Pretty much anything that races at Goodwood or the Mille Miglia would qualify, I expect.

It’s all crazy. My first venture into comments both online and on Jalopnik were Davey’s articles.

Those guys walked that tightrope between the past and the future, and I don’t think they get enough recognition for their authenticity in all of it. They really pushed the goalpoasts in the right directions.

Motor Trend has a great episode of Autobiography about this car and the story behind it. It’s actually worth more because it was split in half by a leader of the Swedish Mafia. There are so many layers to the story around this car.

Salvage title due to very light damage to the middle of the car
